Romano & Sumner was honored to be asked to present several topics for the Fort Bend Chapter of NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness). The presentation was made on June 4, 2015 and covered:
1. The Powers of Attorney – presented by Kenny Sumner and covering the durable power of attorney, medical power of attorney, HIPPA release form, and the Declaration of Mental Health Treatment forms that caregivers can utilize when a loved one is in crisis.
2. Guardianship – presented by Kenny Sumner and providing a brief overview of how to initiate the process, when it makes sense to do so, liabilities that might be faced and limitations of this important role.
The turnout for this event was fantastic and there were many, many questions asked of both Paul and Kenny. Unfortunately time ran short and the topic of Civil Commitment was not covered. Both Paul and Kenny agreed to return at a future meeting to cover this topic as well as other topics that caregivers have particular interest in (i.e. Estate Planning with particular focus on Special Needs Trusts and Supplemental Needs Trusts).
We hope that the all who attended the presentation had all of their questions answered, but if not please feel free to contact our offices for a consultation.
If you have a loved one that suffers from Mental Illness, NAMI is a wonderful organization that provides education, training, support and other resources. There are local chapters with classes and groups near you.
