Back in June 4, 2015, Paul Romano and I spoke at the Fort Bend Chapter of NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness). We appreciated the opportunity to present for NAMI, and thought that the presentation was very successful.
The plan for this event was to present on the following:
Paul walks you through the legal proceedings in which someone with a mental illness is committed to a mental health facility against their will. In the state of Texas the Involuntary Commitment process is governed by the Texas Constitution and the Texas Health & Safety Code.
Unfortunately, time was cut short on Paul’s portion of the presentation, Civil Commitment, so he wrote up a summary of that presentation. We also decided that at a future date, we would give our presentations in full once again.
That time has come, and we are proud to be speaking this Friday October 23, 2015 at the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Seminar. Slides for our presentation will be made available online for those who are interested, but cannot make the event. These can be found below the press release.
For more information on this important event, please read our press release below:
Who: Romano and Sumner, PLLC attorneys Paul Romano and Kenny Sumner will be making presentations at the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Seminar on Guardianship Seminar & Ad Litem Certification. The seminar will provide 4 Hours CLE credit toward Ad Litem Certification.
What: Paul Romano will speak on “Establishing a Guardianship” and Kenny Sumner will speak on “Guardianship & Mental Health Commitment.”
When: Friday, October 23, 2015, 8:00am to 12:45pm CDT
Where: The Forum/Assembly, Two Allen Center, 12th Floor.
Why: Houston Volunteer Lawyers often sees either parents looking to obtain guardianship of their disabled child who is turning 18, or adult children seeking to help an elderly parent.
As of September 1, any attorney filing an application for guardianship must be certified by the State Bar of Texas. This course provides that certification. The seminar is free if you accept a pro bono guardianship case though Houston Volunteer Lawyers.
If you or a loved one is in need of legal counsel regarding the guardianship process or mental health commitments, please do not hesitate to contact our office today. We strongly suggest you seek the advice of an experienced attorney when faced with these situations. The laws and legal proceedings that have been developed for guardianship and civil commitments are in place for a good reason. However, without the guidance of an experienced legal team, they can be very daunting for a person to walk through on their own.
